NEXT PLANNED ACTIVITIES

During the last General Assembly of Members, several activities were proposed for the year 2023.

The second part of the Rachel Ritchie Scholarship has already produced results that we will soon make public. A Labour Camp will be held in La Torre de Fontaubella in July. Later, there will be an exhibition related to the 85th anniversary of the bombings in the Priorat at the Falset Castle Museum, among other initiatives.

As for the upcoming 19th Historical Event (so, next year will be the twentieth!), our plan is to hold it in October and dedicate the Event to the 13th International Brigade (Dombrowski).

We will keep you informed of the details as soon as the dates can be confirmed.

Yesterday, Thursday August 18, we organized a visit to Brigader Eddie Balchowsky's sites, commented by Toni Orensanz.

We met in the afternoon at Pradell-Torre de Fontaubella railway station, to follow the footsteps of the brigader, musician and exceptional man Edward Balchowsky. Naturally, in addition to the train station (where the train-hospital was) we visited Chabola Walley and other places where he stayed.

After the activity, the literary-musical presentation of the book "On vas perdre el braç, Balchowsky?" (Where did you lost your arm, Balchowsky?) was held at the Syndicate of La Torre de Fontaubella, by its author, Toni Orensanz.

To finish, the president of D. O. Montsant, Pilar Just, presented us with the "Joana" wine from Sant Rafel wineries.

COMMEMORATION OF THE BATTLE OF THE EBRO.

As every year, the Direcció General de Memòria Democràtica and the Consorci Memorial dels Espais de la Batalla de l'Ebre (COMEBE), in collaboration with the Pinell de Brai Town Council and the Terra Alta County Council, had programmed an event of commemoration and tribute to the victims and fighters of the Battle of the Ebro.

The event usually took place around the "Cub de la Pau" monument, at the top of hill 705 of the Serra de Pàndols, in the municipality of Pinell de Brai. This year the designated day was Sunday, July 24, at noon.

However, due to the heat wave and drought that has raised the risk of wildfire to dangerous levels, the event had to be moved to the Casal de Pinell de Brai on the same day and time.

At the moment, it seems that there are only two survivors of the "Lleva del Biberó".

SPACES OF THE EBRO BATTLE IN THE PRIORAT.

We already have the first copies of the book "Spaces of the Battle of the Ebro in the Priorat". This book is one of the results of the Rachel Ritchie Scholarship and contains more than a hundred files from the Battle of the Ebro located in the Priorat. We have published it together with the Rovira i Virgili University.

A good summary of the memory spaces of the towns of the region, classified in informative files where the type of space is identified together with its historical valuation, the conservation state it is, the ease of access and the GPS coordinates. All this complemented with photographs of the elements. An exhaustive work by the winner of the Rachel Ritchie Scholarship, the historian Josep Josep Munté i Mateu.

You will find more complete information in this document (in Catalan).

From now on it will be distributed among the members and sponsors who have helped make it possible. The public presentation will also take place soon in some places of the Priorat. Soon it will be available in bookstores, too (ISBN 978-84-8424-903-0).

Despite the current pandemic, finally we could go ahead, as every year, with the 16th NJLM Event.

The play "Mort a les cunetes" (Death by the gutters) by David Pintó and Joan Valentí has been performed. It is a well-crafted and emotional work, necessary to recover the memory of the victims of the repression that took place immediately after the war.

The work of the versatile actor Joan (John) Valentí, accompanied by the music of Martí Marsal, left a pleasant impression on the audience.

Needless to say, all the representation was carried out with the appropriate protective measures, as had been indicated for these cases.

THE CENSUS OF DEPORTED IN THE NAZI STALAGS IS AVAILABLE.

The Democratic Memorial has published the census "Catalan and Spanish Deportees at Nazi Stalags".

With more than 9,100 entries, is the most complete census of deported Catalan and Spanish people published so far. The database is the result of research in which the Amical de Mauthausen and Pompeu Fabra University have also participated. The research recovers the memory of the persecution suffered by thousands of Catalan and Spanish Republicans deported to Nazi concentration and extermination camps.

This database allows the reconstruction of the testimonial biographies of the deportees from exile to deportation and subsequent release, if this happened. The contents are also offered with a didactic and attractive visualization, through specific maps that allow to navigate on the concentration camps and Nazi extermination camps and their secondary camps, as well as through maps of places of exile.

You can do the queries at memoria.gencat.cat/deportats or banc.memoria.gencat.cat

The database is searchable by surnames, birthplace, camp, and other fields.

IN MEMORIAM OF NEUS CATALÀ

On the eve of April 14th (Day of the Republic), died at 103 Neus Català, Honorary Member of our Association. Survivor of the totalitarian regimes of twentieth century, she devoted her life to tirelessly disseminating the barbarities of the recent history.

Neus, defender of freedom and democracy, had resisted Francoism (who provoked her had to flee from Catalonia- and Nazism, who deported her to the extermination camp of Ravensbrück. Once released, she continued to fight fascism from France.

At November 2015, in Guiamets (where she was born and died), our association and the Town Council paid an homage to her when she did her 100th aniversary as a great fighter for freedom, equality and anti-fascism.

Neus, we would like to thank you for helping us to remember these -almost inhuman- facts and to help us to recover our historical memory (which is so much needed for not to 'stumble again in the same stone'). You will be forever in our memory.

TENTH ANNIVERSARY OF NJLM

Our association 'No Jubilem la Memòria' has been celebrating its 10th anniversary. In 2003 the group was founded with the aim of recovering the historical events and memories of the period relating to the Second Republic and the Spanish civil war in the Priorat region. The varied activities that NJLM has brought to fruition during this time have helped to bring about a broader and deeper understanding of the complexities of those times, characterised by the fight for justice and liberty.

One of the projects that has contributed greatly to the achievement of our objectives has been the annual events organised by the association. This year, we commemorate the ten years since our foundation with different activities from now until the end of the year. The first part of our celebration toke the form of a collaboration between NJLM and the 'International Brigade Memorial Trust' (IBMT). This British group organised a tour from the 21-25th September 2013 in memory of the International Brigaders who fought in the Battle of the Ebro. NJLM participated in the planning of this tour, run by the IBMT, collaborating in the organisation of the public events that are related to the Priorat region.

The second part of the celebration of our tenth anniversary will take place towards the end of of this year. The main event will be the presentation of a book that encompasses the ten years of 'No Jubilem la Memòria'. The text includes the majority of themes, lectures, talks and debates that have been covered during our annual events. A programme will be planned around this presentation; the dates will be confirmed in the near future.
